Planetary War (Graha Yuddha)

In Vedic astrology, Planetary War is called “Graha Yuddha” (ग्रह युद्ध). It literally means two planets fighting for dominance when they come extremely close to each other in the sky. This concept is used in predictive astrology to judge which planet wins and which becomes weak, affecting results in a horoscope or during transit.

1. What is Planetary War (Graha Yuddha)?

Planetary War occurs when two planets are very close in the same zodiac sign.

According to classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Brihat Jataka, a war occurs when:

  • Two planets come within 1° of each other in the same sign.

  • Only visible planets participate.

Planets that can fight

The war occurs only between:

  • Mars

  • Mercury

  • Jupiter

  • Venus

  • Saturn

Planets that never participate

  • Sun

  • Moon

  • Rahu

  • Ketu

These are excluded because of their astronomical nature or special status in astrology.

2. Types of Planetary War

Ancient astrology describes four types of Graha Yuddha based on planetary latitude and appearance.

1. Bheda Yuddha (Piercing War)

  • One planet crosses the path of another

  • Both planets lose strength

  • Considered very destructive

2. Ullekha Yuddha (Grazing War)

  • Planets slightly touch or graze each other

  • Mild effect

  • Results depend on dignity

3. Apsavya Yuddha (Side War)

  • Planets pass each other from sides

  • Moderate results

4. Anshumardana Yuddha (Ray War)

  • One planet's brightness suppresses the other

  • Brighter planet wins

In modern astrology software, longitude difference is mostly used instead of visual observation.

3. How Winner of Planetary War is Decided

Several rules exist in classical astrology.

Rule 1 — Higher Longitude Wins

The planet with higher degree in the sign wins.

Example:

Mars → 15°20
Venus → 15°45

Venus wins the war

Rule 2 — Brightness (Tejas)

If brightness is considered:

Winner strength order:

  1. Venus

  2. Jupiter

  3. Mercury

  4. Mars

  5. Saturn

Rule 3 — Planet with Larger Disc

Ancient astronomers observed apparent diameter in the sky.

4. Effects of Planetary War

The losing planet becomes weak and may give negative results.

General Results

Planet losingPossible Effects
Marslack of courage, conflicts
Mercuryconfusion, poor decisions
Jupiterfinancial or wisdom issues
Venusrelationship problems
Saturndelays increase

But results depend on:

  • house placement

  • dignity

  • aspects

  • dasha

5. Important Classical Rules

According to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra:

  • Losing planet becomes combust-like weak

  • Winning planet gains extra strength

  • If war occurs in own sign or exaltation, damage is less

6. Example of Planetary War

Example chart:

Mars → 12° Leo
Mercury → 12°30 Leo

Difference = 30 minutes

Mercury wins

Results:

  • Mercury gains power

  • Mars loses ability to act strongly

Possible interpretation:

  • intellect dominates over aggression

7. Planetary War in Transit (Mundane Astrology)

When war occurs in transit it may affect:

  • politics

  • markets

  • weather

  • wars between nations

For example:

  • Mars vs Saturn war → conflicts, accidents

  • Mercury vs Jupiter war → financial confusion

8. Planetary War in Stock Market Astrology

Some astrologers track planetary war to predict volatility in NIFTY 50 and BSE Sensex.

Example interpretations:

Planet WarMarket effect
Mars vs Mercuryhigh volatility
Venus vs Jupiterliquidity movement
Saturn vs Marscrash fear

9. When Planetary War Does NOT Matter

Many modern astrologers ignore it if:

  • planets are more than 1° apart

  • planets are in different nakshatras

  • planets are strong in navamsa

10. Famous Example

A famous planetary war happened in 2022 between:

  • Venus

  • Jupiter

This was widely discussed among astrologers.

Planetary War occurs when:

  • Two planets come very close (within ~1°)

  • Only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn

  • Higher degree planet wins

  • Losing planet becomes weak.
